Dr. Gregor Gysi, born on January 16, 1948, in Berlin, initially trained as a skilled worker in cattle breeding and later became a lawyer after successfully completing his law studies at Humboldt University in Berlin. He has been practicing as a lawyer since 1971.

From late 1989 to January 1993, he served as the chairman of the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS). He was a member of the People’s Chamber of the GDR from March to October 1990 and served as the chairman of the PDS parliamentary group.

From late 1990 to January 2002, he was a directly elected member of the German Bundestag and chaired the PDS group or faction. From January to July 2002, he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives, holding the office of Mayor and Senator for Economy, Labor, and Women. After that, he worked as a lawyer and publicist.

Since October 2005, Dr. Gysi has been a member of the German Bundestag, each time directly elected in his constituency of Berlin-Treptow-Köpenick. From October 2005 to October 2015, he was the chairman of the DIE LINKE faction in the German Bundestag. Since March 2020, he has been the foreign policy spokesman for the DIE LINKE faction or group. He is divorced and has two sons and a daughter.

From 2016 to 2019, he was the president of the European Left.

His autobiography, “Ein Leben ist zu wenig” (“A Life is Not Enough”), was published in October 2017.
