Omar Mohammed was a historian in Mosul in Iraq and teaches at the university there. When the Islamic City invades his hometown and brutally takes it over, he decides to act – and take action against misinformation and the manipulation of public opinion. In his blog Mosul Eye, he writes incognito about what is really happening and doesn’t mince his words.
His involvement not only puts himself in danger, but also his whole family. He must constantly fear being discovered and punished by IS supporters. However, his mission is ultimately more important to him than his own life. He now lives in exile in Europe, continues to run Mosul Eye tirelessly and is a research fellow in a program at George Washington University that deals with extremism.
